Porsche Killer? Justice on a Joyride

Porsche Killer? Justice on a Joyride

**The post is written based on news available on the internet, I haven’t fact-checked it, please your discretion.**

Update: 27 May, as expected it seems the blame is being shifted to driver for the accident and not the richie rich. I will not surprised if driver will take the fall.

Update: The bail of the accused boy was canceled. The JJB revoked the bail on Wednesday night, remanding the minor (if you say it) to the Yerawada home, located on the same premises as the JJB, until June 5.

Luxury car, pumping music, the world a blur of speed. That feeling of invincibility shattered in an instant. An ear-splitting screech, a sickening thud, and two young lives, Ashwini Costa and Anish Awadhiya, snuffed out by a teenager behind the wheel of a Porsche Taycan.

Pune screams. Ashwini and Anish, two bright young IT professionals, are dead. Their dreams reduced to a smear of asphalt on a highway, courtesy of Vedant Agarwal, son of Brahma Realty’s Vishal Agarwal, joyriding in a ₹1.5 crore Porsche Taycan. The details are horrifying. Underage, unlicensed, and allegedly intoxicated, the teenager turned his luxury car into a deadly weapon.

But here’s the sickening twist – within 15 hours, the teenager walks out on bail. Allegedly he was asked to write an essay on accident and take counseling for drinking. This is the grim reality of the Pune crash, a case that’s got our social media feeds exploding and our faith in justice teetering on the edge. Why? Because the kid at the wheel isn’t some random punk; he’s the heir to a real estate empire. And in India, that pedigree can morph into a bulletproof vest against the law. It’s like a dystopian reality show where the punishment for taking a life is a weekend of detention. But who is to be held accountable?

The officials who, since March, permitted the luxury sedan to be driven on municipal streets without a valid license plate or registration. A system that, in the unlikely event that juvenile drivers are caught, only imposes a light reprimand on them and their guardians? An institution that happily serves alcohol to children despite the fact that Maharashtra’s legal drinking age is 25, and most other Indian states have legal drinking ages of 21? Or a system that ignores the imposition of fines for infractions including speeding, driving while intoxicated, and driving without a license, especially when the offenders are well-known, influential, and wealthy?

Why the Rich Kid Gets a Free Pass?

History paints a grim picture. Remember Sanjeev Nanda, the son of a millionaire, who mowed down six people in a drunken rampage in 1999? After years of legal wrangling, he walked free. Or Bollywood actor Salman Khan, whose 2002 hit-and-run case dragged on for over a decade before a questionable verdict. These are just the high-profile cases. Countless others involving the wealthy fly under the radar, the victims mere footnotes in a system rigged for the privileged. Here’s how it plays out:

  • Money Talks: Affluent families can afford the best lawyers, who exploit loopholes and manipulate the legal system.
  • Apathy Breeds Injustice: Public outrage is a flash in the pan. The media moves on, and the pressure to hold the powerful accountable wanes.
  • A Broken System: India’s overburdened judicial system crawls at a snail’s pace, allowing the wealthy to game the process through endless appeals and delays.

The Pune crash is a punch to the gut, a grim reminder that sometimes, justice goes on a joyride with the privileged few. It forces us to ask some tough questions. Are we content with a legal system that discriminates based on bank balances? Is the value of a life truly determined by your zip code?

This isn’t just about Ashwini and Anish. It’s about demanding a future where justice isn’t a luxury car some can afford and others can’t. It’s about building a society where the scales of justice don’t tip based on the weight of your wallet, but on the weight of the evidence. Let’s keep the noise going, not just online, but in the real world, demanding accountability for all. Because in the end, if we don’t fight for a fair system, who will?
